- The map is incomplete because many Virginia herbarium specimens have not yet been identified to variety. Differences in abundance and habitats (if any) with sympatric var. mollis are not well known and need study. See Comments under the species map for Mondarda fistulosa.

- Mesic to more often dry upland forests, rocky woodlands, clearings, old fields, forest edges, meadows, and roadsides; usually on moderately to strongly base-rich soils. Probably frequent in the mountains and parts of the Piedmont.
