- The map is incomplete because many Virginia herbarium specimens have not yet been identified to variety. Differences in abundance and habitats (if any) with sympatric var. fistulosa are not well known and need study. See Comments under the species map for Mondarda fistulosa.

- In much the same habitats as M. fistulosa var. fistulosa: open forests, woodlands, clearings, fields, and roadsides, especially on calcareous soils. Probably frequent in the mountains, infrequent or rare elsewhere.
