Comments
This taxon has been widely lumped into a broad concept of Calystegia sepium, and most Virginia specimens have still not been segregated from other taxa of the complex. The current map is therefore very incomplete. This taxon is southern in distribution, apparently extending north on the Coastal Plain to Virginia. Flora of the Southeastern U.S., however, does not show it extending north of North Carolina.

A useful key with diagnostic characters of this taxa can be found in the Flora of the Southeastern U.S., which is in the process of transferring all Calystegia spp. back into Convolvulus. However, several of the combinations in Convolvulus have not been formally published, so we are holding off on evaluating and/or following this change until the work is completed.
Habitat
Only two Virginia specimens have been identified as this subspecies. Fernald and Long 9410 (at GH) was collected on the tidal shore of the James River while Wieboldt 5287 was collected in a similar habitat on the Rappahannock River. The status of this taxon is unknown; it may be rare as it reaches its northern range limits, or simply under-recognized.
