- Dry or moist, open forests, woodlands, clearings, and road banks over mafic or calcareous rocks in the Piedmont; also recently documented on a dry, fluvial terrace woodland with shell deposits along the Pamunkey River, where it grows with other calciphiles. Infrequent to rare in the far s. Piedmont (Pittsylvania, Halifax, Charlotte, and Mecklenburg counties); disjunct to New Kent Co. in the c. Coastal Plain.
