- Dry, open forests, rocky woodlands and barrens on mafic and calcareous rocks in the mountains; seepage swamps, tidal swamps and marshes, and wet clearings in the Coastal Plain; reported to occur on a variety of woody and herbaceous hosts; in the dry habitats of western Virginia, it usually parasitizes Solidago, Helianthus, and other members of the Asteraceae. Rare in all provinces.
