- This species had not been seen in decades until a large population was discovered in Isle of Wight County in 2023.
- Habitat
- Peaty shores of natural lakes and ponds, wet rights-of-way. Historically known only from Lake Drummond in the Great Dismal Swamp (s. Coastal Plain) and a sinkhole pond in the Shenandoah Valley (Ridge and Valley province). The 2023 discovery was made in a right-of-way through swamp forest habitat. There it occurs in abundance with Hypericum galioides, a species new to the Virginia flora.
