- A little known reference is: Azolla and its occurrence in Virginia, Brit. Fern Gaz. 10:305-309 (1973). 13 records from 9 counties are reported as new at that time. Since then, this species appears to have become more abundant and migrated inland to some extent.
- Habitat
- Alluvial and tidal swamps, floodplain sloughs and pools, depression ponds, interdune ponds, beaver ponds, old mill ponds, other impoundments, and slackwater along river shores. Frequent in the Coastal Plain; infrequent in the Piedmont and mountains, but often numerous in dense colonies where found.
