- The distinction between this species and S. dissectum can be problematic; perhaps better treated as a variety of the latter as has been done historically (as Botrychium dissectum var. tenuifolium (Underw.) Farw.).
- Habitat
- Mesic to, less often, dry forests, early-successional forests, clearings, and old fields. Common in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont; infrequent to rare in the mountains.
