Comments
The first bona-fide trees of this species in Virginia were found at South Quay (Suffolk City) by J.F. Townsend in 2002, where only 3 individuals exist. A large stand of trees was discovered in 2016, approximately 2.5 km northwest of the South Quay site, in Southampton County.
Habitat
Cut-over streamhead pocosin at Suffolk City site; non-riverine swamp/pocosin at Southampton County site, where it grows mixed with Chamaecyparis thyoides in a shrubby woodland with small to medium-sized hardwoods. Rare, s. Coastal Plain; known from one site in sw. Suffolk city and another in adjacent Southampton County.
