- Map is very incomplete as many Virginia herbarium specimens have not been identified to variety; a state-wide review of herbarium material will be needed to fully map the two vars. See also the species-level map and Comments for Carex muehlenbergii and the map for C. muehlenbergii var. enervis.
- Habitat
- Dry often rocky or sandy forests, woodlands, and clearings; apparently especially common in sandy soils, both in the Coastal Plain and in the mountains. Carex muehlenbergii is frequent throughout Virginia, but var. muehlenbergii appears to be less frequent than var. enervis and more confined to sandy soils.
