- This species has been somewhat overlooked in Virginia studies, and specimens have often been misidentified as Carex crinita or C. gynandra; critical examination of specimens in this complex is needed to more accurately determine the full distribution and status of C. mitchelliana.

- Alluvial swamps, freshwater tidal swamps, seeps, and wet flatwoods; rarely in oligohaline tidal marshes. Infrequent to rare in the s. and c. Coastal Plain.
