Comments
There is a clinal, geographic change in pubesence in populations of this species. The more glabrous, northern variant, of which Virginia plants are representative, has been called var. brevis (fide FNA).
Habitat
Wet flatwoods and non-riverine swamps, depression swamps and ponds, maritime swamps, and interdune ponds. Infrequent in the s. Coastal Plain, with somewhat outlying populations in Hanover County in the n. Coastal Plain and Accomack County on the Eastern Shore. Usually forms large clonal patches where found.
