Comments
A chasmogamous form, known to occur both north and south of Virginia, including a station in Washington, D.C., has been called var. pringlei (Greenm.) Freudenstein (Harvard Papers in Botany, 1997). However, it does not seem to breed true and so is better recognized as a form (Weakley 2022).
Habitat
Humus of mesic to dry forests, especially those dominated by oaks. Frequent throughout.
