At least 5 infraspecific taxa have been named, two of which are attributed to Virginia. Until a more satisfactory treatment is available, we choose not to recognize them here. The species is polymorphic and the utility of recognizing infraspecific taxa seems questionable; see FNA for a lengthy, detailed discussion of this. In any case, mapping these vars. would require a very large amount of herbarium work since they have never been recognized in Virginia studies or collections.given the weedy tendencies and consequent polymorphism of the species.

Gardens, fields, and other open, weedy habitats. Common throughout.
