- Well-drained floodplain forests, alluvial swamps, and riverbanks. Infrequent in the inner Coastal Plain, south of the James River, where it is restricted to a five-county area; may be locally common in favorable bottomland habitats, especially along the Blackwater and Nottoway rivers and their tributaries.
