This species is native to South America and was first recorded in Virginia from the City of Suffolk (1976). More recently, it has been documented in a number of other localities, as far north as Westmoreland County. The plant is small and inconspicuous, with spine-bearing fruits that can deliver a painful jab!
Habitat
A weed of lawns and roadsides. Infrequent to rare in the Coastal Plain and southeastern Piedmont.
