- Dry-mesic to dry (rarely mesic), oak-dominated upland forests and woodlands; most numerous in acidic, infertile soils but also found in calcareous soils. Common in the mountains and inner Piedmont; infrequent in the outer Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain.
