- Comments
- Elisans (2019) in FNA17 recognizes three subspecies, with only ssp. muralis occurring in North America. Phylogenetic study by Carnicera et al. (2017, Taxon 66: 393-407) suggests that ssp. visianii (Kümmerle ex Jávorka) D. A. Webb is very closely related to ssp. muralis but ssp. pubescens (J. Presl & C. Presl) D. A. Webb (treated as C. pubescens by Carnicero et al.) is not. The appropriate ranks, at least for ssp. muralis and ssp. visianii, appear to be unsettled, so we will continue to follow the FNA treatment for the time being.
- Habitat
- Naturalized in the mortar of walls, building ruins, and rock outcrops near plantings. Rare, widely scattered throughout; sometimes abundant where found.
