- Habitat
- Rich, mesic and dry-mesic forests over calcareous and mafic rocks, especially limestone and dolostone; occasionally in rich alluvial forests and dry rocky woodlands. Infrequent in the mountains, primarily in the Ridge and Valley province, but also in the Cumberland Mountains and Blue Ridge; rare in the inner Piedmont. May form extensive colonies where found.
