- Originally reported from Virginia by Frederick Pursh in 1806 from Southampton County, and by Ferdinand Rugel in 1840 from "swamp near Portsmouth." Not until the 1990's was it again found in the wild in Virginia.
- Habitat
- Margins and hummocks of Coastal Plain depression ponds and swamps; usually inundated during normal high water. Rare, Coastal Plain; populations are known from Isle of Wight and York counties, with historical records from the Chesapeake City and Southampton Co.
