Comments
The map includes records for three varieties: var. fistulosa, var. mollis (L.) Benth., and var. rubra Gray. See also map and comments for var. brevis Fosberg & Artz. With the exception of the latter, vars. listed here have not been sorted out in herbaria and generally seem rather minor and problematic, needing evaluation. Individual distribution maps are not available at this time, pending additional study and examination of herbarium specimens.
Habitat
Mesic to more often dry upland forests, rocky woodlands, clearings, old fields, forest edges, meadows, and roadsides; usually on moderately to strongly base-rich soils. Common in the mountains; frequent in the Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain.
