 - Two varieties, defined by differences in fruit morphology, are attributed to our area and require further study: var. crebra, of the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains; and var. palustris, wide-ranging throughout e. North America and southward. See also comments under Proserpinaca pectinata concerning the status of the taxon known as Proserpinaca intermedia.
 - Habitat
 - Alluvial and tidal swamps, floodplain sloughs and pools, seasonal ponds, ditches, muddy depressions, and other seasonally flooded habitats. Common in the Coastal Plain; infrequent in the Piedmont; rare in the mountains.
