Botanical Name
Viola odorata L.
Common Name
Sweet Violet, English Violet
Flora of Virginia Name/Status
Viola odorata L.
Native of Europe. The white flowers of Viola odorata appear earlier than our native species. We have old records from Montgomery, Patrick, and Roanoke where it may no longer occur. The Albemarle station has persisted for at least 40 years. Give the reproductive modes in Viola, it seems logical to assume that seeds are produced at least autogamously in which case the population would be considered locally naturalized rather than merely persisting from cultivation.
Gardens, lawns, and around old homesites, persisting and spreading locally from seed. Rare, mountains and Piedmont; known from four counties.
