Map incomplete at this time, pending a full inventory of Virginia herbarium specimens. See comments under composite map of Viola pubescens / eriocarpa complex. Nomenclature follows Ballard, H.E., J.T. Kartesz, and M. Nishino. 2023. A taxonomic treatment of the Violets (Violaceae) of the northeastern United States and adjacent Canada. Jour. Torrey Bot. Soc. 150(1): 3-266.
Rich, well-drained floodplain forests, rich cove forests, and various mesic to dry-mesic slope forests on fertile soils. Common in the mountains, frequent in the Piedmont, and rare in the Coastal Plain. This species and Viola pubescens grow in similar habitats, and sometimes together, but V. eriocarpa occurs on a wider range of sites and is more common overall.
