The map includes records for three varieties: var. digitalis, var. floridana (Bailey) Naczi & Bryson, and var. macropoda Fernald. Virginia herbarium specimens of Carex digitalis generally have not been determined to the varietal level, and the individual varietal maps are incomplete or skeletal at present.

It is is common statewide, but the status of the three vars. has not been fully determined.
