Comments
Collected at Hampden Sydney College by John Donnell Smith and named for him by C.F. Austin in the Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club 6:190 (1877). No type specimen was named but numerous specimens were distributed to herbarium often named A. ohioense var. donnellii. Hampden Sydney, VA, thus is the type locality for this moss, which to date (2026), has not been recollected in the state! John Donnell Smith served in the Civil War, participated in all the conflicts of the Army of Northern Virginia, was badly wounded at Gettysburg, and was present at Appomattox at the end of the war. His connection to Hampden Sydney would be interesting to know.
