- Comments
- Two controversial varieties - var. floridus and var. glaucus - occur in Virginia. They may have been more geographically and morphologically distinct prior to centuries of cultivation and cross-breeding. A species map is provided here, showing both native and introduced populations. See also the individual maps for the two varieties.
- Habitat
- In our area, var. floridus is rare on mesic, forested bluffs and well-drained bottoms in the se. Coastal Plain sandhills, while var. glaucus is rare in coves, mesic slope forests, and small-stream bottoms of the sw. Piedmont and southern half of the mountains. Plants of both vars. (especially of var. floridus), as well as cultivars of ambiguous disposition, occur as scattered escapes from cultivation in fencerows, roadsides, and around old home sites.
- Native Status
- Native
