Botanical Name
Galium obtusum Bigelow
Common Name
Blunt-leaf Bedstraw
Flora of Virginia Name/Status
Galium obtusum Bigelow
The map contains all records for the species. Varieties filifolium (Wieg.) Fern. and obtusum have been widely recognized in our area, and individual varietal maps are also provided. The vars. are said to differ based on overlapping leaf and floral measurements, with var. filifolium possessing a generally smaller and more delicate morphology. In practice, these taxa intergrade completely, and many specimens encountered in the field will have characters intermediate between the two. Further study is needed.
Freshwater and oligohaline tidal marshes, floodplain forests, swamps (all types), wet flatwoods, and depressions. Common in the Coastal Plain; frequent in the Piedmont; infrequent in the mountains.
