- This taxon has been widely lumped into a broad concept of Calystegia sepium, and most Virginia specimens have still not been segregated from other taxa of the complex. The current map is therefore very incomplete. This taxon is northern in distribution, and the map on the Vascular Plants of North Carolina website shows it as strictly confined to the Appalachians in that state. Therefore, some of our records seem phytogeographically questionable and specimens need critical re-examination.
A useful key with diagnostic characters of this taxa can be found in the Flora of the Southeastern U.S., which is in the process of transferring all Calystegia spp. back into Convolvulus. However, several of the combinations in Convolvulus have not been formally published, so we are holding off on evaluating and/or following this change until the work is completed.
- Habitat
- The few confirmed specimens are from scattered counties state-wide. Habitats include fields, roadsides, bottomland thickets, and other weedy habitats, usually in moist to damp soil. Its overall status is poorly known but plants may be common in local areas where found.
