- Our plants are referrable to var. philadelphicum if the putatively western var. andinum (Nutt.) Ker-Gawl. is recognized. However, Skinner in FNA (Vol. 8) gives a very detailed and lucid account of variation in the species, which concludes that infraspecific taxa are unwarranted according to our present understanding.
- Habitat
- Dry ridge-crest forests, woodlands, barrens, clearings, and meadows; occurs in both nutrient-poor and base-rich soils. Infrequent in the mountains.
