This species reaches its southern range limit in Southampton County, the City of Suffolk, and immediately adjacent Gates Co., N.C. It is now rare in most areas due to lack of suitable habitat and widespread fire exclusion. See also Kalmia carolina.
Seasonally wet flatwoods, sandhill woodlands and pine barrens, borders of seeps and seepage swamps, and on dry oak/heath slopes in ne. Virginia only; often occupies habitats that have a seasonally perched water table and are frequently burned (although most are now quite fire-suppressed). Rare (but locally common at one or two sites) in the Coastal Plain from Caroline County south.
