Approximately 17,000 bryophyte collection records have been entered into the Digital Atlas database based on records provided by the Consortium of North American Bryophyte Herbaria (https://bryophyteportal.org/portal/). A renewed effort has begun to update the status of many of these old collections as well as document new records to fill in the many gaps still existing in species distributions for Virginia.
Please see the following two publications for general information about the history of bryophyte collecting and research in Virginia, as well as accounts of the bryophyte flora of the central and southern Piedmont areas of the state.
